DUNE HOUSE

Dune House explores the potential of modular construction to create a contemporary family residence that feels deeply rooted in its landscape. Designed for a private client in Kansas, the project combines the structural efficiency of six 40-foot shipping containers with conventionally timber-framed construction, creating a two-level home with generous living spaces, private accommodation, integrated parking, and elevated outdoor areas. The composition is deliberately restrained, allowing the architecture to sit quietly within the expansive Kansas landscape while maintaining a strong contemporary identity.

The home is organized around a series of stacked and carefully positioned container volumes, creating a clear architectural rhythm across two levels. The containers form the primary residential structure, while a conventionally timber-framed garage extends from the main volume to provide parking for two vehicles. This hybrid approach allowed the project to retain the dimensional efficiency and structural character of container construction while introducing the flexibility required for larger openings, circulation, service spaces, and the generous garage volume. The resulting massing creates a distinctive interplay between horizontal and vertical elements, with the taller upper volume establishing a strong focal point within the composition.

KANSAS, UNITED STATES

A central design objective was to create a strong connection between the home and its surrounding landscape. Large glazed openings bring natural light deep into the interior, while carefully positioned doors and windows provide direct visual and physical connections to the surrounding prairie. The upper-level terrace extends this relationship vertically, creating an elevated outdoor space that takes advantage of the site’s expansive views. Internally, the layout separates shared living areas from private bedrooms while maintaining an open and connected sequence between the kitchen, dining, living, and exterior spaces.

Materially, Dune House combines dark corrugated steel cladding with warm timber accents, creating a contrast between the industrial character of the shipping containers and the natural warmth of conventional construction. Timber soffits and detailing soften the rooflines, while the restrained palette of charcoal steel, natural wood, and expansive glazing gives the residence a refined contemporary character. The low-pitched roofs and carefully articulated overhangs reinforce the horizontal quality of the architecture while protecting the building’s openings from the elements.

Rather than treating the shipping container as an aesthetic statement in itself, Dune House uses modular construction as a foundation for a broader architectural idea. The six containers provide a precise and efficient structural framework, while timber framing introduces the flexibility needed to accommodate the home’s garage and larger spatial requirements. Together, these systems create a residence that feels permanent, warm, and highly resolved a contemporary Kansas home where industrial modularity and traditional craftsmanship come together in direct response to the landscape.
